Note that the numbers 38/50 and 45/55 refer to the distance of the holes on the fixing plate from the axis of rotation of the column. This distance will change the 'Ackermann' or the rate of turn of the kart for the same movement of the steering wheel. Further holes will result in a higher rate of turn then closer holes.

The position of the holes on a standard steering column is 38/50. The alternate model (45/55) is referred to as a 'slotted' column and can be visually recognized by the presence of an oval hole close to the shaft.
